According to a survey among 3,000 UK adults undertaken by OnePoll and commissioned by Microsoft’s Bing
search engine business, a huge three out of five were keen to change
jobs, but 46% couldn’t afford to do so, while a further 42% said that
they didn’t have the right expertise.
As to what their top 10 dream jobs were, they comprised:
- Pilot
- Working for a charity/not-for-profit organisation
- Writer
- Photographer
- Musician/singer
- Sports trainer/coach
- Formula 1/MotoGP/rally driver
- Actor
- Journalist
- Artist
Interestingly, however, nine of the most attractive top 10
professions involved people largely setting their own agenda and having a
reasonable amount of control over their own destiny.
Sociologist Jenni Trent Hughes said: “Many of us feel our lives are
controlled by our work. We often feel that our work is what we do for a
living. In today’s times of economic austerity, many of us feel
uncertain about the future so I’m not surprised that most people want to
feel in control of what they do day-in, day-out.”
