This may be a tough read for many as it’s all too easy to fall into this trap. LinkedIn has revealed its list of the most overused professional buzzwords, drawn from the profiles of its 140 million members.
They’re the type of words that say almost nothing specific about a person – the equivalent of listing ‘showing up to work’ in your experience section.
Here are the top 10:
1. Creative
2. Organisational
3. Effective
4. Extensive experience
5. Track record
6. Motivated
7. Innovative
8. Problem-solving
9. Communication skills
10. Dynamic
Nearly all of these attributes are better shown than told, and many offer no value to the reader (e.g. motivated, innovative, communication skills).
As LinkedIn’s connection director stated “Use language that illustrates your unique professional accomplishments and experiences. Give concrete examples of results you’ve achieved whenever possible and reference attributes that are specific to you.”
