Unemployment highest in 17 years

Official figures released today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have confirmed that UK unemployment has reached its highest level in 17 years.

According to the ONS the number of people out of work increased 118,000 to 2.68 million between from September to November 2011 – the highest it has been since 1994. This means the unemployment rate now stands at 8.4% of the 'economically active' population.

The North East is suffering with the highest rates of joblessness at 12%, with the lowest being found in the South East.

Whilst not unexpected, the ONS figures underline corrosive effects of ongoing economic uncertainty across the UK, the Eurozone and beyond. The retail industry in particular has suffered from dramatic falls in consumer spending, in part created by fears over job security.
