Unemployment has reached 2.62 million, its highest level for 17 years, while young people now account for more than a million jobless, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed.
The total number of people out of work rose by 129,000 in the three months to September, pushing the unemployment rate up to 8.3 per cent.
