Toyota has revealed that it is taking on 175 staff because of better-than-expected sales of an eco-friendly car it makes at its Burnaston plant. The Japanese manufacturer is recruiting the extra manpower because of the success of the Auris Hybrid Synergy Drive, which it started producing in June. The firm said that, since last month, they had been working overtime to cope with demand. Toyota said that European sales of the Auris hybrid were 15 to 20 per cent ahead of its forecasts. In a statement the company said: "This volume increase is forecast to continue into 2011. "In order to minimise the burden on our employees, we plan to increase the speed of our production line and need to hire a number of staff."
Toyota, which currently employs 2,946 people at Burnaston, said the recruitment of the agency staff would begin next month using recruitment firm Blue Arrow to contact former Toyota staff on its books who left the company voluntarily in 2008 and 2009.
