Derby-based Bombardier "the powerhouse of the economy"

Colin Walton, UK Chairman of Bombardier, described the high skills levels of the 2,600 staff, based in Derby – many employed in high technology – who have gone on to set up Bombardier operations in Delhi, Singapore and China. Bombardier launched the Stanstead Express train last week and has also produced the trains used at the World Cup in South Africa and will be delivering the world’s largest monorail in Sao Paulo, Brazil – all developed from Derby based technology transfer.  Bombardier provides the trains for the London Underground and Colin is in regular discussion with the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, who described the capital as the “powerhouse of the economy.”  Colin replied that transportation and Bombardier as “the energy behind the powerhouse – which comes from Derby.”
